How to increase in knitting a purl stitch Purl the first stitch as directions call for, but do not slip the stitch from left needle. Instead, purl into the back of the same stitch, and then slip the stitch off the needle.

Technique for increasing in knitting The above is the most basic and common technique for increasing in knitting. When you increase a stitch with this method it forms a neat and invisible increases. This type of increase is often used in the middle of rows or where a series of increases are needed. You will often come across a term such as “increase 5 stitches across evenly”. This is often the case when knitting sleeves from the cuff up towards the shoulder.
