The hardest part of starting a home based craft business is finding the business to start. I love knitting and crochet but I needed to fill in for the slow times. So I always kept my eyes open for new business ideas.

There were a couple of other businesses around here that home workers worked with. I didn’t do either of these, but I do want to mention them. If you are in a manufacturing area, you may want to call and see if they out source or contract out any of their work.

One plant here makes disposable medical clothing. Such as they use in surgery. They made disposable caps, booties, pants and shirts all for the medical field. This company used both on site employees and contractors to sew up their product.

They would supply their contractors with the pre cut items, thread and elastic. The sub- contractors would get their work not from the factory but from a contractor that worked with the plant. The home worker did have to have her own serger to sew these garments and they were paid by the piece.

Companies do like contracting out this work because they are only paying for the work completed. They don’t pay for breaks, medical insurance or sick days. They only pay when the product come back completed to their specifications.

If you can’t start your own home-based craft business you might consider working for a contractor. These business are out there and are legitimate. Just make sure you do you home work. (Do your research) Yes there is some expense if you count your equipment such as a sewing machine but you do not “pay” them for the supplies and then get reimbursed.

Another business contractor around here was painting ceramics. This job I personally never considered because I couldn’t paint no matter how hard I tried. Paint by numbers was too though for me. But there were many that enjoyed this type of work. Some of the women that subcontracted from me had worked with this lady also.

Again they would meet their contractor at a specified place and drop off completed work and pick up a new batch. I was never involved in this so I don’t know where the contractor got her items.

Do check you local yellow pages and the Chamber of Commerce to find any manufactures. If your town is too small like mine, check the nearest large city.

When I began they were looking for a contractor that was out away from the city. Call these companies and see if they work with contractors. If they do they will put you in touch with the contractor in your area. Or if needed they may offer you a contractor position.Than you will have your home based business.

Selling crafts online

If you knit, crochet, ceramics, sew or scrapbook, you just need to think outside the box. Ask friends for some creative business ideas and then decide what could apply to you for a home based business. And don't forget selling crafts online is possible no matter what craft you enjoy.
